Small changes…

Over the past 15 years or so I’ve watched with very mild interest at how LEDs have taken over from the electric bulb in automotive lighting. I’ve always been a bit disappointed that the glass bulb has dominated car design for so long, but in the past few years we’ve seen auto designers get more creative with lighting designs using LEDs rather than repeating tired old fixtures. However, in commerical applications, the designs are very pragmatic, replacing fairly standard signal components with LED-versions that have similar dimensions and fit the existing mountings. It’s a good move, because for other motorists, these signals are more likely to be working than their old bulb counterparts, and they’re kind of novel to look at – arrays and good color purity and such.
