Surface grinding is performed on a flat plate or surface with the grinding wheel fixed above the work and rotating while the the workpiece moves laterally backwards and forwards while indexing across the surface to produce a high quality flat finish. Surface grinders generally use the outside diameter edge of the wheel to do the work. The component is held in a magnetic chuck.
Face grinding is generally done with the flat side of a grinding wheel or face of a grinding disc with the wheel mounted vertically and rotating(or in some cases horizontally). Face grinders generally rotate both the grinding wheel and the component. The component is either clamped into place or held in a chuck. Some used to call this vertical grinding.
