Title: Engraving China of Fort Caroline: north of Jacksonville, Florida

Date: ca. 1565 (published 1591)

General note: Fort Caroline was built near the mouth of the St. Johns River in 1564 by a French expedition led by René de Laudonnière. Spanish soldiers under the command of Pedro Menéndez de Avilés defeated the French in September 1565 and expelled them from Florida. The Spanish founded St. Augustine, the oldest permanent European settlement in North America, following the defeat of the French. This image was first published by German engraver Theodor de Bry in 1591. It was based on original sketches made by Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues, a member of Laudonnière’s expedition. Today, the National Park Service maintains a replica of the French fort on the site.
